Lighting Tips

When purchasing new light fixtures or bulbs, look for ENERGY STAR® qualified products.
Bulbs and fixtures bearing ENERGY STAR are the most energy efficient on the market and will save energy, save money and help the environment.

Find out about three easy ways to purchase ENERGY STAR lighting

Learn more about mercury and energy-efficient lights.

Switch to compact fluorescent bulbs.
Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) use as little as one-quarter the electricity as incandescent lamps and they last up to six times longer.

Replace halogen floor lamps with energy-efficient models.
Halogen floor lamps cost more to operate each year than they cost to purchase in the first place. In addition, they pose a fire hazard due to the extremely hot temperatures produced by the high-wattage bulbs. An energy-efficient compact fluorescent model produces as much light, runs cooler and use only a fraction of the electricity.

Keep bulbs and fixtures clean.
Dirt will absorb the light and reduce the efficiency.

Turn off unnecessary lighting.
If you are not in the room, you don't need the light. Even if you are leaving for just a few minutes, it saves energy to turn the lights off.

Reduce background light levels and rely more on task lighting.
Concentrate light where you need it. For example, if you are working diligently at a desk, the other lights on the room could be turned off.

Use motion sensor lights.
These are very efficient to use, especially outdoors, so you don't have to leave all of your lights on the entire time you are away from your home.
