In 2011, new criteria go into effect for the Vermont Residential Building Energy Standard (VT-RBES, Vermont's Energy Code) and the Environmental Protection Agency's voluntary ENERGY STAR Homes program. As a result, Efficiency Vermont has updated our service structure to reflect these changes.

Efficiency Vermont now offers two Residential New Construction services at no cost to homebuilders and new home buyers in Vermont.

Vermont ENERGY STAR Homes

Vermont ENERGY STAR Homes is the premier energy efficiency service for new homes offered by Efficiency Vermont and Vermont Gas Systems. Since 2000, this service has been supporting and encouraging home builders to build ENERGY STAR qualified homes in Vermont. Each ENERGY STAR Home incorporates building details that ensure superior energy efficiency, durability and health. Homes achieving ENERGY STAR requirements receive the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) ENERGY STAR for Homes label. Efficiency Vermont, in partnership with Vermont Gas Systems and Washington Electric Cooperative, offers customers financial incentives that increase as higher levels of energy efficiency are achieved in the home.

In 2011, the EPA is beginning implementation of a new version of ENERGY STAR for Homes, known as ENERGY STAR Version 3. The new specifications expand on the current ENERGY STAR Homes standard to provide increased energy efficiency, durability, and comfort. This is achieved through criteria addressing quality insulation and air sealing details, efficient lights and appliances, HVAC design and installation, and water managed construction.
