Residential Rental Property Rebates

More Information

Free CFLs

Lighting accounts for approximately 20% of annual household electricity bills, or approximately $200 per year. One of the simplest, cost-effective ways to reduce electric use in your rental units is by installing CFLs in your apartments. Each CFL you install uses approximately 66-75% less energy than an incandescent bulb and lasts six to ten times longer than a standard incandescent bulb. NOTE: Free CFLs from Efficiency Vermont are for use in tenant spaces only and are not available for use in common spaces. Efficiency Vermont  will not reimburse customers for products purchased at retail stores.

Free Low-Flow Shower Heads & Aerators

A typical four-unit building with electric water heaters can save over $140 in electricity costs by using low-flow shower heads and aerators. These easy to install devices reduce water use and also lower water-heating costs by decreasing the amount of hot water flowing through taps. NOTE: Free low-flow aerators are available in different flow rates, depending on the application. When completing the Efficiency Vermont rebate form, please indicate the number of aerators requested by room-type (bathroom and/or kitchen) to ensure you receive the appropriate supplies.

Refrigerators - Rebate $150/each

New ENERGY STAR® qualified refrigerators and freezers use half the electricity of standard 10-year-old units. Since ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators and freezers use advanced features such as better insulation and more efficient technology, they can save up to $100 per year on your tenant’s energy bill. Refrigerator rebates are available for replacement refrigerators only. Disposal receipts are required.

Ventilation Systems - Rebate $110/each

Apartments that are not properly ventilated can be a hassle for many property owners, and cause good tenants to look elsewhere for housing. Ventilating your units for a minimum of eight hours per day improves building durability and indoor air quality by:

  • Reducing odors from smoking, pets, and cooking.
  • Reducing moisture levels from showers, cooking, and laundry.
  • Reducing contaminants associated with many cleaning products, furniture, fresh paint, carpet, and other building materials.

Eligible ventilation systems must meet the following requirements:

  • Bathroom fans must be ENERGY STAR qualified. Find products on the ENERGY STAR products page.
  • Fans must be rated for “Continuous Duty.” ENERGY STAR qualified fans must be installed with an automatic control set for at least eight hours per day.

Visit the fan requirements page for more details.
