Energy-Saving Tips for Small Businesses
Lights
- Turn off lights when spaces are not occupied, and let windows provide light wherever possible.
- Replace incandescent bulbs with ENERGY STAR® qualified compact fluorescent or LED bulbs.
- Replace halogen track or recessed lighting with ENERGY STAR qualified LEDs.
- Replace T12 linear fluorescent fixtures with High-performance T8s (HPT8s) or T5s.
- Install occupancy sensors to shut off lights when rooms are not in use.
- Use LED exit signs instead of incandescent or compact fluorescent exit signs.
- Replace exterior metal halide or high-pressure sodium lights with LEDs.
- Use automatic controls or properly set timers to control outside lights.
Heating & Cooling
- Turn off fans when the building is not in use.
- Install ENERGY STAR qualified programmable thermostats and locking covers to prevent tampering.
- Check equipment or have it serviced regularly (evaporative coolers, fans, pumps, etc.) for proper operation and maintenance needs.
- Make sure doors and windows have tight seals and keep them closed when running your air-conditioning system.
- Properly insulate all exterior walls, ceilings, and wall cavities.
- Use ENERGY STAR qualified roofing material with high reflectance.
Office Equipment
- Activate "sleep" mode on computers, printers, and monitors for highest energy efficiency.
- Turn off printers, copiers, and coffee makers at the end of the day, and desk lamps and fans when not in use.
