Energy-Saving Tips for Office Buildings
LIGHTS
- Turn lights off in unoccupied rooms and let windows provide light wherever possible.
- Use timers and keep them properly set (i.e., no outside lights during the day).
- Replace incandescent bulbs with ENERGY STAR® qualified fluorescent bulbs, including task lighting on desks.
- Use LED lamps for exit signs instead of incandescent bulbs.
- Replace T12 fixtures with High Performance T8 (HPT8) or T5 lighting systems.
- Install occupancy sensors to shut off lights when rooms are not in use.
HEATING & COOLING
- Turn off fans when the building is not in use.
- Install ENERGY STAR qualified programmable thermostats and locking covers to prevent tampering.
- Make sure doors and windows have tight seals and keep them closed when running your air conditioning system.
- Check equipment regularly (evaporative coolers, fans, pumps, etc.) for proper operation and maintenance needs.
- Properly insulate all exterior walls, ceilings, and wall cavities.
- Use ENERGY STAR qualified roofing material with high reflectance.
OFFICE EQUIPMENT
- Activate "sleep" mode on computers and monitors for highest energy efficiency.
- Turn off printers, copiers, and coffee makers at the end of the day, and desk lamps and fans when not in use.
