Smart Grid

The smart grid is an upgraded electric system that uses fiber optic cable and digital technology to relay information back and forth between the customer and the utility, and between the utility and various components of the electric grid. When fully operational, the smart grid will provide a more reliable electric system, with the ability to incorporate renewable energy sources, and to offer customers tools to manage their electric use.

Vermont utilities received a $69 million federal grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to help build smart grid infrastructure that will extend to most of Vermont over the next three years. The federal funding is being matched with $69 million in funding from Vermont utilities.

Efficiency Vermont is working closely with Vermont utilities and regulators to identify potential ways in which the Smart Grid investment can provide energy efficiency savings to Vermont homes and businesses. For instance, the Smart Grid provides the potential for viewing energy usage in much greater detail, which will make it easier to identify opportunities for energy efficiency.
